Seattle PCI Chapter

Background

  • The PCI of Seattle NSBE AE is a derivative of the national NSBE initiative.
  • The current Seattle PCI chapter began August 2007.
  • The national PCI program works with kids on all ages to increase interest in math and science.
  • The Seattle chapter currently focuses only on high school students.
Approach
  • Recruit students who are falling behind in mathematics.
  • Register students into NSBE Jr.
  • Build up students skills to their grade/ age level.
  • Upon reaching grade level, push students into more accelerated programs.
  • Allow accelerated students to help other struggling students.
  • Split PCI into two levels:
    • Building (behind other students in grade level)
    • Excelling (performing at or above grade level)
Goals
  • Keep no more than a 4:1 student-to-tutor ratio.
  • At 25 kids, establish multiple NSBE Jr. chapters.
  • Establish a strong presence in the local high schools and communities.
  • Maintain a minimum of 25% professional as tutors.

  • Approximately 8 tutors are present every session.
  • Currently we remain within our student tutor ratio < 4:1.
  • We meet every 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Saturday of each month from 10am - 12pm.
  • Due to word of mouth of the success, 8th graders are queuing up to enroll in the up coming year.
  • We currently only have 2 graduating seniors.

Short Term Plan
  • Use 1st hour as engineering hour (presentation or hands-on activity).
  • Use 2nd hour as tutoring hour.
  • Bring in students from the University of Washington and Seattle University as tutors.
  • Begin to establish kids as NSBE Jr.
  • Always solicit for tutors.
